This accomplishment marked Japan as the fifth country to soft-land on Earth's natural satellite, joining the ranks of the US, the Soviet Union, China, and India.

Critical Power Struggle

Despite the successful landing, Slim faces a critical challenge – its solar cells are failing to generate electricity. This unexpected issue leaves the mission's survival hanging by a thread, relying solely on its batteries, which are expected to discharge soon. Once the batteries run out, Slim will lose communication capabilities, creating a silent void between the spacecraft and Earth.

Engineer's Urgent Battle

Engineers are racing against time to salvage the mission. Prioritizing activities, they have deactivated heaters and are retrieving crucial data to assess the effectiveness of the landing software. However, the root cause of the solar power system failure remains unclear, adding complexity to the ongoing rescue efforts.

Hope Amidst Challenges

Japanese space agency (Jaxa) officials remain hopeful, speculating that the solar cells may be obstructed from the Sun's view. As light angles change on the Moon, there is optimism that Slim could potentially revive. Jaxa's vice president, Hitoshi Kuninaka, asserts that, despite the power struggle, the original objective of achieving a soft landing was successful as Slim continues to send data.

Slim carried two small rovers, successfully ejecting them before landing. The mission's primary goal was to study the local geology over the next fortnight, although uncertainties arise due to the impending power limitations. Jaxa's reliance on new precision-navigation technologies proved successful, with the onboard computer utilizing rapid image processing and crater mapping to navigate hazards and achieve a pinpoint landing within 100m accuracy.

Amidst the challenges, Slim's landing highlights the difficulties of lunar missions, with only about half of all attempts proving successful. The global lunar exploration community emphasizes the importance of learning from both successes and failures. Dr. Simeon Barber from the UK's Open University commends Japan's precision landing, emphasizing the collective knowledge gained from diverse lunar missions.

Dr. Emma Gatti, from the digital magazine SpaceWatch Global, acknowledges the historic and prestigious nature of Japan's achievement. She emphasizes its significance for Japan as a country, showcasing the capabilities of a nation not as large as China or the US.
